Hope

"In the unlikely story that is America
There had never been anything false
About hope." - Barack Obama

The odds are thin, the shot is long
So many things that could go wrong
But still, as long as hope is there
Action follows and not despair.

The hope of living peacefully,
The hope of dreams fulfilled,
The hope of health, the hope of wealth,
Of productive fields tilled.

Of life, of love, of golden years,
The hope to simply be,
To watch our children growing up
Healthy, bright and free.

But what is hope you well may ask?
And what role does it play
In helping us to cope with life
And not bend to dismay?

It's funny how we're made, you know,
Both how we work and why.
As long as we hold on to hope
We never cease to try.

As long as there's the slightest chance
As long as there's a shot,
We try to keep our thoughts on that
And give all we've got.

As long as there's the slightest hope,
If any chance at all,
We reach out for that golden ring
Or run to catch that ball!

It's only when we give hope up
On that eternal day,
That death in somber robes may come
And steal our breath away.

So what is this hope? Life is hope,
And nothing less it seems.
As long as can keep up hope
We'll live to follow dreams.

Hope is also motivation,
The drive to see it through,
The will to love the will to work
The will to go and do.

Just as at sea a drowning man
Will always grab a rope,
So too, in our darkest hour
We always cling to hope.
