The Unflinching Advance of Technology

I have been working in the High Technology and IT sectors for 40 years now. It's been a fascinating experience. I got started back in the days before the first home computer or even the first hand held calculator. I have always loved my work and have approached every day as a learning opportunity.

Some of the projects I have worked on include:
Project Activity
NASA's Pioneer Venus Program I helped build the flight accelerometers for the first landing on Venus
NASA's Space Shuttle IUS I helped build the flight navagational accelerometers for the Inertial Upper Stage
Cyclotron Particle Accelerators I built cyclotrons used for radioisotope production and installed them at some of the leading research centers around the world
The Positron Emission Tomography Camera I helped build an early PET camera which used anti-matter anihilation events for computer imaging
The Deuterium Tritium Neutron Generator I helped build an early DTNG device which employed nuclear fusion to generate neutrons for cancer therapy
The Electron Beam Lithography system I worked on an early EBL machine which adapted SEM technology to make master masks for microprocessor chip production
The Hubble Space Telescope I worked with HST Mission Control at Goddard Space Flight Center to digitize, index and make all HST engineering drawings available online
Computers I have worked on lots of them for the past 35 years
IT Infrastructure Monitoring For the past 10 years I have been active in promoting the use of open source software for network and system monitoring and management

Goals

I would like to retire some day, but figure I probably won't get around to that until I'm about 150 years old. So, in the mean time, here are some of my goals;

  1. To focus my efforts on leaving the world a better place than I found it
  2. To finally accomplish something I've always wanted to do and get a college degree
  3. To continue to promote the use of open source monitoring tools
  4. To bring open source Artificial Intelligence to bear in the field of IT Management (Open Source AI)
  5. To live long enough to see the first self aware machines (please see "The age of spiritual machine - When Computers Exceed Human Intelligence" by Ray Kurzweil)
